The aerobics workout music was queued up in the iPod. But Joann wasn't there yet. She had to check the calories burned chart to see how many of the little suckers she was going to ride through today on the exercise bike. Which is a great womens aerobic workout, by the way.

Still burning calories bike riding is but one way to go. There are many exercises that are great for burning up calories. Let's take a look at others.


This info came from a handy "Exercise and Burning Calories" chart put together by the State of Virginia. The chart laid it all out. Although I gotta confess it didn't show calories burned during sex. Sorry.

But say you wanted to know how many calories are burned during walking. Well, a 125 pound woman moving at four miles-per-hour burns about 270.

But step it up a notch and go hiking cross country. You're working harder doing so rather than just walking. So the "number of burned calorie" count goes higher. To 360 an hour.

Let's see, running at pace of a 12 minute mile burns 480 calories. At least according to our exercise calories burned chart. Bump that to an 8 minute mile and the hourly calories burned running jumps to 750.

How about calories burned on a stationary bike? Peddling at a moderate pace burns 420. Accelerate to a vigorous pace and your excercise bikes calories burned goes to 630 an hour.

Yet how about elliptical trainers - calories burned? That comes in at 540. While that stair step machine you love to climb burns off 360 calories.

Anyway now you've got some idea of calories burned during exercise. ANY of the exercises listed should cause your heart rate to jump to 70-80% of its maximal potential. Which will then bring about the desired cardio improvement.
